Overview

Pulmonology is a medical speciality that deals with diseases involving the respiratory tract. The term is derived from the Latin word pulmō, pulmōnis ("lung") and the Greek suffix -λογία, -logia ("study of"). Pulmonology is synonymous with pneumology (from Greekπνεύμων ("lung") and -λογία), respirology and respiratory medicine. Pulmonology is known as chest medicine and respiratory medicine in some countries and areas. Pulmonology is considered a branch of internal medicine, and is related to intensive care medicine. Pulmonology often involves managing patients who need life support and mechanical ventilation. Pulmonologists are specially trained in diseases and conditions of the chest, particularly pneumonia, asthma, tuberculosis, emphysema, and complicated chest infections.

Facilities & services

  • The OPD consultation and medical procedure services on weekdays from 9:00 am 5.00 pm
  • Clinic area for OPD for hospital based teaching.
  • Daily OPD and indoor services for patients requiring admission in hospital.
  • Non-invasive ventilation facility for admitted patients.
  • Facilities for all routine bed side procedures like pleural aspiration, intercostal drainage, Fine needle aspiration cytology and biopsies
  • Diagnostic facilities e.g. Pulmonary function laboratory and Bronchoscopy laboratory
  • A dedicated  Specilaty clinic for patients of Asthma during OPD
  • General and private male and female wards along with facilities of intensive care with medicine department
  • Participation in national health programme for treatment and eradication of tuberculosis
  • Periodical Health Education camps for diagnosis, treatment and prevention of tuberculosis
  • Regular consultation service to community at urban and rural health centers of medical college.

Teaching/Training Activities

The curriculum has been prepared in pursuance of MCI regulations and comences in the 3rd semester of the MBBS program as allied subject of Medicine and continues up to 9th semester. The students are posted in batches for clinical training to learn clinical skills, for the duration prescribed by the MCI, and encouraged to practice practice these skills on patients under direct guidance of faculty. Lecures, small group discussion and problem based tutorial are also organised for development of comprehension, analysis and communication skills. Students are also encluraged to participate in regular bedside clinic and integrated seminar, case presentation skill sessions are also organised for undergraduate students.

To establish center with diagnostic facilities of Endobronchial ultrasound guided lymph node sampling and Thoracoscopy
